What are B Complex Vitamins?
The B vitamins are a group of eight essential, water-soluble vitamins which function as coenzymes in the body and are catalysts for many biochemical reactions. They supply the body with energy by helping enzymes to convert carbohydrates to glucose and they also assist in fat and protein metabolism. They are all water-soluble and excess amounts are excreted in the urine; therefore, they must be regularly replenished in the body through diet or supplementation.
The eight B vitamins are:
- B1 (thiamine)
- B2 (riboflavin)
- B3 (niacin)
- B5 (pantothenic acid)
- B6 (pyridoxine)
- B7 (biotin)
- B9 (folic acid)
- B12 (cyanocobalamin)
B+ contains 6 of these vitamins that are critical to the proper functioning of the nervous system and are necessary for healthy skin, hair, nails, and eyes. They are also a part of the mucosal lining of the mouth and help keep the bowel functioning normally by enhancing the muscle tone of the gastrointestinal tract. Microorganisms in the large intestine are also capable of supplying some of the B vitamins as long as healthy intestinal flora exists.
Important functions of B vitamins include:
- Maintenance of cell growth and division
- Formation of red blood cells and prevention of anemia
- Nervous system support
- Immune system support
- Help regulate metabolism
- Maintenance of muscle tone
- Maintenance of healthy hair, skin, and nails
B vitamins are grouped together and named B-complex because they have similar coenzyme functions and are usually found together in foods. Because a significant amount of the typical American diet consists of heavily processed foods that are nutritionally depleted, many people may not receive the daily requirements of B vitamins. Refined flour products, sugar, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine and stress can all deplete B vitamins from the body, so it is fairly easy to develop a deficiency of one or more of the B vitamins. Deficiency symptoms include fatigue, irritability, nervousness, low mood, insomnia, loss of appetite, sore or burning mouth or tongue, and cracks at the corners of the mouth. B vitamin deficiencies can also lower immune function and can cause anemia, constipation, neuritis, skin problems, acne, hair loss, early graying of the hair, increased serum cholesterol and weakness of the legs.
B vitamins help in the metabolism of female hormones and are especially important during pregnancy, and in women who are taking birth control pills or on hormone replacement therapy. B vitamins can also be helpful for women experiencing water retention, fatigue, low mood or mood swings/irritability, and loss of sex drive.
B vitamins are also important for cardiovascular and heart health. Specifically, B6, B12, and folic acid are involved in reducing elevated homocysteine levels. Homocysteine is an amino acid normally found in blood, and elevated homocysteine levels can increase one’s risk for cardiovascular disease.
The elderly are also often deficient in B vitamins due to poor diets and impaired nutritional absorption in the gut. Common symptoms of B vitamin deficiencies in the elderly are fatigue, low mood and cognitive impairment.
A deficiency of B vitamins can cause a wide variety of diseases or result in symptoms including:
- low mood or other mood disorders
- nervous system disorders
- elevated homocysteine (associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease)
- skin conditions
- water retention
B+ Liquid Vitamins is a balanced formulation containing all eight B vitamins and is taken under-the-tongue. This route of administration bypasses the need for digestion, as absorption occurs directly into the bloodstream from the mouth. This may be especially important for individuals with compromised digestion, or for anyone who prefers a liquid form of supplementation rather than capsules or tablets.
What is the recommended dosage?
Place 20 drops (1ml) under the tongue and hold for 20-30 seconds before swallowing. May be mixed with a small amount of water or juice (hold in mouth 30 seconds before swallowing). Naturally sweetened and natural raspberry flavor.
Are there any side effects or precautions?
If you are pregnant, nursing, have any health condition or are taking any medications, consult your doctor before using this product.
